Alexandra Bücker, Founding Member
Hi, my name is Alexandra Bücker. I’m one of the founders of Mukisa Foundation. I’m a special needs teacher by profession. When I first came to Uganda in 2001, I came to help a friend in an orphanage in Kampala. My plan was to stay for 6 weeks – in the end I spend 8 years in Uganda.
I was so touched by Uganda and it’s people, especially by it’s children. Their happiness and their strong will to survive impressed me deeply. Back home in Germany I founded the EBU association together with friends to support vulnerable children in Uganda.
In 2002 I returned to Uganda and took my best friend Sonja with me. With the great support of 40 friends and my family who paid me each 10€ a month I was able to finance my living in Uganda and concentrate fully on the children at risk.
After volunteering at Sanyu Babies Home for some years we realised that children with disabilities are marginalised by the community and neglected by the government.

When we than met Florence Namaganda the idea of Mukisa was born. In 2006 we started Mukisa Foundation Center in Lungujja and ever since it’s our heart project.
Mukisa is working towards an inclusive global society in which the attitudes of the non-disabled are no longer barriers to the life- chances of those with impairments.
My first priority for children with disabilities and their families is to end their isolation. I want recognition and acceptance for these children.
My aim is to improve education and the access to education for children with special needs in Uganda. Therefore the society needs to be educated about disability. Mukisa Foundation is a great place. Together we have already achieved so much and we will continue!
Even if my place of residence has been Germany for 10 years, Uganda will stay my second home, that I visit and support regularly. My thanks to everyone who brought us to where we are today and I bow to all parents with children with disabilities: you are doing such a great job, stay strong!!!
