Organisation Overview
Mukisa Foundation is a registered non-governmental organisation (NGO) under registration number S.5914/11638, based in Lungujja, Kalema Road, Kampala. The Foundation has a nationwide reach through community outreaches, aiming to deliver quality health and education services to children with special needs and their families.
Position: Special Needs Education Teacher

Location: Kalema Road, Lungujja
Job Summary
The Special Needs Education Teacher will contribute to inclusive learning by:
- Supporting lesson preparation and delivery that facilitates equitable participation of pupils with diverse learning impairments and disabilities.
- Planning and delivering lessons, conducting continuous assessments, and organising remedial sessions as needed.
- Fostering both in-class and out-of-class participation of learners with special needs.
Eligibility Criteria
Qualifications
Essential:
- A Grade III teaching certificate from a recognised teacher training college.
- Advanced training in Special Needs Education is a mandatory requirement.
Experience
- At least 3 years of professional experience in Special Needs Education.
- Practical experience working with children with moderate to severe disabilities.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Assessment and Planning:
- Assess learners’ skills and educational needs.
- Develop Individualised Education Programs (IEPs) for each learner.
- Plan activities tailored to each pupil’s abilities.
- Teaching and Mentorship:
- Teach and mentor pupils in classes, small groups, and one-on-one settings.
- Implement IEPs, assess pupil performance, and track their progress.
- Update IEPs throughout the school year to reflect learners’ development.
- Collaboration:
- Discuss pupils’ progress with parents, teachers, and administrators.
- Supervise and mentor teaching assistants working with pupils with disabilities.
- Transition Support:
- Prepare pupils for transitions between grades and for life outside of school.
- Capacity Building:
- Contribute to designing individualised learning pathways for children with disabilities.
- Develop tools to monitor learners’ progress.
- Provide guidance to improve the capacity of children with disabilities in performing activities of daily living (ADL).
- Documentation:
- Produce reports and maintain relevant documentation.
Desirable Skills and Competencies
- Extensive knowledge of disabilities such as cerebral palsy, autism, and Down syndrome, including assessment, intervention, and progress monitoring.
- Experience in managing disabilities and impairments in children.
- Understanding of disability inclusion and accessibility to services for persons with disabilities.
- Fluency in written and oral English, with strong report-writing skills.
- Knowledge of the disability education sector in Uganda.
- Strong interpersonal skills and empathy, especially when working with vulnerable populations.
