Sonja Schulze Dieckhoff, Founding Member

My name is Sonja Schulze Dieckhoff and I am one of the three founder members of Mukisa Foundation. I was born and raised in Germany and whilst growing up I quickly realised I would love to dedicate my life to working with and helping the most vulnerable and neediest people in our society. I was to fulfill this dream by choosing to become a special needs carer by profession.

I first came to Uganda in 2002 and immediately fell in love with this beautiful, diverse country and its wonderful people. My original plan was to come for just two months, but this was soon extended and eventually I stayed for seven amazingly rewarding years!

Sanyu Babies home was my first volunteer position in Uganda, caring for the children and working with the staff to help improve all aspects of the living conditions for the children. Working alongside Alex, another founder member of Mukisa Foundation, we establish the first kindergarten within the home, which was a huge success and happily is still in operation today.

Following on from the success of the kindergarten and having become increasingly frustrated with the lack of facilities for children with special needs in Uganda, we teamed up with Florence, the third founder member, and created Mukisa Foundation in 2006. This was the start of this wonderful success story.

I met my husband Christian in 2011, and following a visit to Uganda, he also fell in love with this astonishing country and has supported me and Mukisa Foundation ever since with all his heart.

my desire is to inspire people, my philosophy is to help create a better world and treat every person and living being with respect and love, to give my voice to those who don’t have a voice of their own and to the ones who are unseen.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart s for all your love & support. Even the smallest step can make a biggest difference.
