The Mukisa Education Program

The Mukisa Foundation Education Program began in 2008, thanks to Ms. Susan Marschner, an American special needs educator. Initially, Ms. Marschner taught a small class of eight children with moderate to severe learning needs and two siblings who, due to financial difficulties, could not attend mainstream school. Over time, many students were integrated into mainstream schools, and those who couldn’t became the pioneers of Mukisa’s vocational skilling school. Today, the program has expanded to offer several specialised learning pathways:

Accelerated Learning/Catch-up Education

This three-year program supports children with moderate to severe disabilities who start school later due to extensive early medical and therapeutic needs.

It aims to equip children under 12 years old with academic, social, and personal skills to prepare them for mainstream education.

Each learner follows an Individualised Education, Health, and Care Plan (IEHCP), focusing on their unique needs and abilities.

The curriculum includes:

The program follows the Ugandan school term schedule and accommodates up to 30 children

Vocational Skilling Program

This three-year program serves children and young adults aged 13 and older with mild to moderate physical or intellectual disabilities. The goal is to equip them with social and economic skills for independent living. Currently, Mukisa boasts of two centers in Kampala and on Bussi Island with a maximum capacity of 25 students per center.

The curriculum covers:

In the final six months, a family member is trained alongside the student to ensure continuity of skills after graduation. Each graduate receives a starter kit to help them launch their own small business.

Apprenticeship Programme

Graduates may participate in apprenticeships within Mukisa or partner organizations to refine and practice their skills in real-world settings.

Education Sponsorship Program

This initiative supports children placed in other schools whose families cannot afford the fees. Siblings from economically disadvantaged families may also receive sponsorship to increase the family’s overall support capacity for a child with special needs.

Through these programs, Mukisa Foundation is committed to providing inclusive, supportive, and skill-building educational opportunities, empowering children and young adults with disabilities to achieve their fullest potential.

Every step we take in education is grounded in our belief that learning can and should be for everyone.
