The situation for children with disability in Uganda

  • Globally, 16% of the population lives with a disability, including an estimated 240 million children (WHO, 2024). In Uganda, 13–16% of children live with some form of disability, placing them among the country’s most vulnerable groups
  • Access to specialised healthcare and rehabilitation is scarce, costly, and inconsistently regulated, with small, fragmented providers unable to offer the comprehensive, multidisciplinary care children with disabilities require
  • Families and caregivers bear a heavy and often invisible burden of care. In Uganda, the cost of caring for a child with a disability covering transport, therapy, medications, assistive devices, specialised nutrition, and caregiving can range from UGX 200,000($56) to over UGX 1,000,000 (278) per month, far exceeding the capacity of most households.

At Mukisa Foundation, our mission is to empower families and communities to provide a nurturing and supportive environment for children with disabilities to live purposeful lives to their full potential. We believe that every child, regardless of ability, deserves love, opportunity, and a supportive environment that enables them to reach their full potential.

Through our work, we aim to strengthen families by providing the knowledge, resources, and emotional support they need to confidently care for their children. By fostering understanding and collaboration within communities, we strive to break down barriers, promote inclusion, and create lasting change.
