Bussi Island
Bussi Island
A Remote Island with Deep Roots
Bussi Island is a small, remote island nestled in the heart of Lake Victoria, home to approximately 10,000 residents. Life here is modest and rural, shaped by generations of tradition and resilience. For decades, fishing was the island’s lifeblood—an economic and cultural cornerstone. However, recent regulatory changes have drastically limited access to fishing grounds, prompting a gradual shift toward subsistence farming as families seek new ways to sustain themselves.
Mukisa Inclusive Village: A Beacon of Hope
In February 2015, Mukisa Foundation conducted a baseline
survey on Bussi Island. The findings were sobering: there were no existing
services or support systems for persons with disabilities—especially children.
Many of the disabilities identified stemmed from preventable causes such as
malaria, untreated infections, and alcohol abuse.
What began as a modest monthly outreach at Bussi Health
Centre III—offering developmental assessments, therapy, anti-epileptic
medication, referrals, counselling, and family support—has since grown into Mukisa
Inclusive Village, a fully operational, inclusive community hub.
Facilities That Foster Inclusion

- Hostels: Safe, supportive accommodation for children with disabilities and their caregivers.
- Demonstration Farms: Hands-on agricultural training that promotes food security and sustainable practices.
- Guest Houses & Camping Sites: Designed to host volunteers, visitors, and partners who journey to Bussi Island to learn, serve, and connect.
